If you’re looking for a fun festival, look no further than Knysna. Aside from the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival taking place from 4 to 13 July this year, Knysna boasts a diversity of festivals and events second to none. July also sees the Rastafarian Earth Festival from 22 to 28 July, while the Ross Taylor Surf Contest returns to Buffalo Bay over the Women’s Day weekend.
The vibrant Rastafarian community of Knysna invites Rastafari and visitors from all walks of life, from South Africa and abroad, to participate in the annual Rasta Earth Festival between 22 and 28 July. This colourful, rich festival celebrates the Rastafarian way of life – their food and music, as well as the philosophy behind this sometimes misunderstood faith.

Judah Square in Knysna plays host to the celebration of His Majesty Haile-I Selassie-I’s Earthday (Birthday) and Emancipation Day, and concludes with the Emancipation Celebration, celebrating the abolition of slavery. The Day of Emancipation starts with dancing and the singing of traditional songs before participants and guests are treated to hot chocolate and bread. Rastafari wear traditional clothing, but everyone is encouraged to join in and celebrate their freedom.
Judah Square in Knysna was established in 1993 and is the administrative Rasta capital of the Southern Cape.
And barely two weeks later the incredibly popular Ross Taylor Surf Contest, in aid of Hospice, kicks off on 8 August in Buffalo Bay and runs until 10 August.

Now in its 6th year, this event has raised over R300 000 for Hospice. It was started in 2011 and, with the love, selflessness and integrity of Ross Taylor ingrained in the competition, has become THE competition to win!
Ross, a local surfer, lost his battle against cancer at the age of 29. It was his wish that an annual surfing competition be held to not only raise funds for Hospice, but to spread the message of “fun and love through giving”.

With the first competition only welcoming 70 entrants, the Ross Taylor Surf Contest quickly became the largest entered surfing competition in South Africa. And most of the entrants have become fast friends with each other, the organisers, and the throngs of locals who support this amazing event year after year. This weekend is all about surfing up a storm, partying with a purpose and having bucket loads of fun!
