The coastal town of Knysna is well known as a favourite destination on South Africa’s Garden Route and, with miles of unspoilt beaches, a sparkling network of lakes, a veritable treasure trove of Cape fynbos and centuries old indigenous forests, it’s no surprise.

These photos were taken by local cyclist Dr Berend Maarsingh during his morning ride in the Knysna forest on Tuesday 4 December.
Few of us will have the opportunity to spy these gentle giants in their natural habitat, or even evidence of their passing as Berend was lucky enough to come across. Luckily, just a short drive outside of Knysna you’ll discover an elephant park, as well as an elephant sanctuary, where guests can get up close and personal with these majestic, massive mammals.
